By January and almost a year of worldschooling, Scott and I had had our longest ever time without overnight vacations with just the two of us. We realized that it had been since before the worldschooling trip that we had really more than a single night without the kids. (Kudos to North Carolina family who took the kids for two different nights while we were there.) Knowing that we were looking at nearly a year without another overnight away from the kids, we grabbed some extraordinarily cheap plane tickets to New York City. The kids were left with our all-but-adopted-daughter Maja, and we took off.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We spent one week in NYC sleeping too much, eating too much, and drinking too much. I realized as we returned home that I had very few pictures of anything from the trip but for the main highlight: tickets to Stephen Colbert\u2019s The Late Show.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

We had a great time. Those (free) tickets aren\u2019t for the faint hearted. You have to arrive by 4pm (the earlier you get there prior to that, the better seats you get). Next, you wait outside (in the FREEZING cold NYC weather) for over an hour. After being processed through the building, you are seated and treated to a fun few hours of the warm ups, the cold opens, the interviews, and more. All in all, it took almost three hours to get in, get seated, and start the show. Even then, we had an absolute blast.<\/p>\n

Scott and I also were able to make it back to one of our favorite Italian restaurants while in NYC. We went to Paola\u2019s on our honeymoon and always love to go back for a good meal. The restaurant has moved at least once, and sadly it was one of the first times I remember that the food just wasn\u2019t as good as it had always been. We made the most of it though by finding a little wine tasting shop down the street and having a great evening.<\/p>\n

While we were gone, Maja kept the kids busy. The three of them attended the Women\u2019s March which made me both happy and proud.<\/p>\n

All in all, I think it was a hugely successful week of everyone getting a little bit of time away from each other. When Scott and I returned to Houston, it was full steam ahead to get the house finished and sold, and for us to hit the road.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
